WHAT TO WEAR FOR PREWEDDING? A PHOTOGRAPHER'S THOUGHTS ON CHOOSING YOUR OUTFITS

When people think about prewedding photos, the first things that often come to mind are wedding dresses and formal suits.

But is that really what prewedding photography has to be about?

1. NO FORMULA FOR OUTFIT FOR PREWEDDING. WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT FEELS RIGHT FOR YOU.

For us, there is no exact formula for what you should wear for a prewedding photoshoot. At its simplest, prewedding photography is about documenting the two of you before the wedding — preserving a little piece of your life together before stepping into a new chapter, with all the changes and responsibilities that come with it.

So, choose something that reflects your personality, something you genuinely like and feel confident wearing.

When you look at it this way, your options go far beyond wedding gowns and formal suits. It could be your favourite outfit, the way you usually dress when spending time together, or simply a small detail that feels personal to you.

And of course, there is nothing wrong with wearing a wedding dress or a suit. If that's what you want and you feel comfortable in it, go for it!

2. CHOOSE OUTFITS THAT SUIT YOUR LOCATION AND YOURSELF

I mention this because, over the years, I've seen quite a few couples struggle with their outfit choices for a prewedding photoshoot.

A beautiful, voluminous dress might look wonderful on paper, but what happens when you're wearing it on a grassy hill, where the ground is damp, or at a location that requires a lot of walking?

Sometimes, it's not even about the outfit itself. It might be something you've never worn before, or a look that leaves you wondering how to stand, move or pose in front of the camera.

Of course, we'll be there to guide you through all of that. But when you're constantly worrying about your clothes or feeling uncomfortable in them, it can affect your mood, your expressions and the way you carry yourself in front of the camera.

And those little things matter more than you might think.

The best outfit isn't necessarily the most expensive or the most impressive one. It's the one that works for your location, allows you to move naturally and makes you feel like yourself.

Location changes a lot. Somewhere cool like Da Lat gives you room for layers and coats. Somewhere tropical like Phu Quoc calls for light fabrics. And at Jardin de Rom, your gown and suit are already included, so you only need to think about a second, casual look.

3. HOW MANY OUTFITS DO YOU REALLY NEED?

For a full-day prewedding photoshoot, we usually recommend just one or two outfits.

This gives you more time to focus on each look, less time spent changing clothes, and fewer unnecessary costs. More importantly, you won't have to rush through every outfit just to fit three or four different looks into a single day.

If prewedding photos aren't something you want to spend too much time on, one outfit and a shorter session can be more than enough.

If you'd like a little more variety, try combining two different styles: one that's slightly more formal and another that's semi-formal or casual.

Just make sure they feel different from each other. There's little point in spending time and effort on two outfits that look almost the same in terms of style and mood.

Trust me, you'll appreciate having more time to enjoy the experience rather than rushing to change into the next outfit.

At the end of the day, your prewedding photos should feel like a reflection of the two of you, not a checklist of outfits you think you're supposed to wear.
